01Concrete and walls

Flat, solid ground, and walls that hold the hill

West Georgia clay moves when it gets wet, so a driveway or a wall that lasts starts with what is under it: the ground graded and packed, a base that drains, and the concrete or block set on top of that. Skip that part and the cracks and the lean show up in a year or two, no matter how good the top looks on day one.

Two of our own jobs: a concrete walk to a backyard building, and the slab floor of a metal building.

03What is your drive doing?

Signs your driveway or wall needs work

Most concrete and wall calls we get from Carrollton, Villa Rica and Newnan start with one of these four signs.

We look first

Cracks that keep widening

A hairline crack along a control joint is normal on almost any concrete slab, but a crack that opens wider every season usually means the ground underneath is moving.

Ask about this
Often a new pour

A slab that has settled

A section that has sunk below its neighbor usually sits on a base that washed out or was never packed, and the low edge it leaves behind becomes a trip for everyone.

Ask about this
Usually a repair

Washouts and water at the garage

Rain running off the drive carries the red clay away from the edges, or runs straight at the garage door. Correcting the grade usually matters more than replacing the concrete.

Ask about this
Often a new pour

A wall that leans

A retaining wall that tips forward usually has water pushing behind it or a weak base under it. It rarely straightens itself, and it usually gets worse every season.

How a driveway goes in, step by step

  1. First

    Grade the ground

The old driveway or the topsoil usually comes out first, down to firm ground. Then the clay is cut to grade, so water runs off the edges instead of across the slab.

  2. Then

    Base and forms

A crushed stone base goes down and gets compacted firm, layer by layer. Then the forms are set to the exact height and slope the finished drive needs.

  3. Pour day

    Pour and finish

The concrete is delivered, poured, leveled and finished, usually all in one day. The control joints are cut so it cracks along the lines, not across the middle.

  4. After

    Let it cure

Usually you can walk on it in a day or two and drive on it after about a week. We tell you the timing for your particular slab and the weather that week.

05What goes into it

What goes into a driveway, and into a wall

The part you see is the last layer, and these are the parts that usually go in under it.

01

Grading and base

Where it goesUnder every driveway and wall

The ground is cut to grade and a packed stone base goes down, so water drains away and the slab or the wall sits on something firm.

02

Concrete driveway

Where it goesDriveways, walks and pads

Poured, finished and cut with joints, so it cracks where it is meant to, along the lines, not across the middle.

03

Block retaining wall

Where it goesWhere the yard drops off

Interlocking block is set on a level base and stepped back into the hill. Gravel and a drain usually go behind it, so the water collecting there does not push the wall over.

04

Drainage

Where it goesBehind walls and beside drives

Water is usually what breaks concrete and pushes retaining walls over in the end. So every quote looks at where the rain goes and how to send it somewhere else.

07The quote

What changes the quote on a driveway?

One price for the whole job before any work starts, and nothing starts until you say yes.

  1. 1

    Length, width and thickness

A longer or wider driveway usually means more crushed stone and more concrete. A driveway that carries a truck or a trailer usually needs to be thicker than one for two family cars.

  2. 2

    Grading in red clay

Clay that has to be cut, hauled or built up adds work before any concrete arrives. A sloped lot in Bowdon or Temple usually needs more grading than a flat one.

  3. 3

    Tearing out old concrete

Breaking up and hauling away an old drive adds work before anything new goes in. A new drive on bare ground usually starts sooner and costs less to prepare.

  4. 4

    Truck access and wall height

The concrete truck has to reach the forms, and a tight lot can mean pumping or extra handling. A taller retaining wall needs a deeper base and more drainage behind it.

09Questions

Driveway and wall questions, answered

Plain answers to what homeowners usually ask about concrete driveways and retaining walls, and anything else you can ask Justin or Jacob when they come out.

Concrete shrinks as it cures and the ground under it moves as the clay wets and dries. Joints and a well-packed base keep the cracks on the lines, where you usually do not notice them.

Usually you can walk on it in a day or two and drive on it after about a week. We tell you for your slab, because the weather and the thickness both change it.

A packed base, the right thickness for what drives on it and joints cut in the right places. Sending water away from the edges matters too, while the finish on top usually matters least.

Sometimes. A leaning wall usually has water behind it or a weak base under it, so we look at both and tell you whether it can be reset or needs rebuilding.

No. The quote is free, and we give it in person, usually the same day you call or the next day. Justin or Jacob looks at the ground, the slope and the water with you.

Yes. Our driveways and walls carry our 5-year workmanship warranty, which covers the way the work was done.
